AM I A FAILURE?

Does feelings of inadequacy prevent you from taking new challenges? Does the well-meaning

comments of those you respect sometimes under-mine your confidence? Does discouragement of past

blunders hold you back from trying again? If so, how can you come to terms with your failures (real

or perceived)?

You have everything to gain by finding an answer to the last question because sooner or

later, everybody fails at something. But people who can deal with failure are resilient. That

means they can put their mistakes in perspective, get up and try again. And next time, they

are more likely to succeed! So let’s see how you can cope with three challenges, namely;

    1.  Potential Failure

    2.  Perceived Failure

    3.  Actual Failure

1)   POTENTIAL FAILURE (WHAT COULD HAPPEN):

You expect the worst and therefore hold back from making an attempt, thinking that your

chances of success are slim.

IDENTIFY THE CHALLENGE(S): Below, put a mark sign to the task that you would

like to succeed in. but feel certain that you would fail at it if you tried.

·         Defending your belief  before your classmates

·         Applying for a job

·         Speaking before an audience

·         Participating in a sport

·         Singing or playing a musical instrument

·         Others……………….

THINK IT THROUGH: Consider the task that you identified above and weigh the possible

outcomes by answering these questions;

“what would I like to have happen?”

“what do I fear will happen?”

Now, write one reason why you should attempt the task despite the risk of failure.

Why don’t you follow this, “All that your hand finds to do, do it with your very power”. So

instead of letting fear of failure immobilize you, put your heart into the task .

2)  PERCEIVED FAILURE (WHAT YOU THINK HAS
HAPPENED): When another person succeeds at some endeavor, you feel that you are a

failure by comparism.

IDENTIFY THE CHALLENGE(S): To whom you are comparing yourself and what

achievement on that person’s part made you feel as if you are a failure?

THINK IT THROUGH: Does that person’s success really means you’ve failed? Why not think

about recent events, such as a test or exam at school, where you did OK and someone else

did better.

Now, write about why it was worth attempting the endeavor.

3)   ACTUAL FAILURE (WHAT HAS HAPPENED): You reflect

on a previous failure and feel that success is not worth the effort.

IDENTIFY THE CHALLENGE(S): Which personal failing do you find most discouraging?

THINK IT THROUGH: Does the failing you answered above truly defines you?

Take for instance, if you have given into some weakness, does that really mean you are

hopeless? Or is it merely an indication that you need assistance?. If you fell while engaging in

a sport, you’d accept a helping hand to get back to the game. Why not take the same

approach to coping with a personal failure? By the way, you can only solve your problem by yourself
That’s the sort of person you can be!

I Hope you have been inspired by this wonderful piece. Thank you so much for your time, words

of encouragement, mails and comments. This wouldn't have been possible without you guys. I would

also love to get feedback from you. You can drop your comments and questions in the comment box
